Show Notes

Patrice Motsepe is one of Africa's most remarkable self-made businessmen. No family wealth, no inherited capital, no safety net — just a law degree, a briefcase, and an extraordinary ability to spot value where others saw nothing.

This episode is based on Patrice Motsepe: An Appetite for Disruption by Janet Smith — an unauthorized biography that traces Motsepe's journey from mining lawyer to the founder of African Rainbow Minerals, and eventually one of South Africa's most diversified business empires. Reyburn draws on the book alongside his own research into stock exchange prospectuses to fill in the deal detail the book leaves out.

The story begins with Future Mining, the contracting business Motsepe ran from a briefcase — mine to mine, contract to contract — before buying his first gold shafts from AngloGold in 1997 at the bottom of the gold market. Within 5 years, that R38 million vendor-financed purchase had grown into a stake in the world's fifth largest gold producer.
